DIGGING UP THE PAST

Villa Golf Course is in the valley in the village of Blackham, in the Wealden district of East Sussex. It lies within the Withyham civil parish. Its nearest town is Royal Tunbridge Wells, which lies approximately 5.3 miles (8.5 km) east from the village. The village is situated on the East Sussex-Kent border.

The name Blackham (Black Hamlet) comes from the village being known as the resting place for smugglers returning from the coast with their booty as it was exactly one day's ride from Dover.

Hever Castle (the childhood home of Anne Boleyn), Penshurst Place and Bolebroke Castle, all regularly frequented by Henry VIII are all within 4 miles of Blackham as is the village of Hartfield - the home of Christopher Robin, Winnie-the-Pooh, and the actual "Pooh Bridge" location in Ashdown Forest where people still play poohsticks.

TEMPERATURES
Daily winter temperatures can range from 1°C to 5°C. In the summer, they range from the mid-teens to 30°C. Being situated in a natural valley can sometimes create its own micro-climate, in winter this can mean that sometimes fog and/or frost can linger longer lower down on the course.

Kent is one of the warmest parts of Britain. On 10 August 2003, in the hamlet of Brogdale near Faversham (only 48 miles away) the temperature reached 38.5 °C (101.3 °F), the then hottest temperature ever officially recorded in the United Kingdom.
TOPOGRAPHY
Kent is in the southeastern corner of England. The major geographical features of the county are based on a series of ridges and valleys running east–west across the county. These are the results of erosion of the Wealden dome, a dome across Kent and Sussex created by alpine movements 20–10 million years ago. Villa Golf course is set in one of these valleys.
RIVERS
Kent's principal river, the River Medway, rises in nearby East Grinstead in Sussex and flows eastwards to Maidstone before it then joins the estuary of the River Thames near Sheerness. The golf course has many water features, one of which is the Kent Water, a stream collects local springs runoff and that joins into the River Medway nearby.
